His time at Raypower, Eko, Industry Nite, and Club Pop helped him to connect with a growing audience of music lovers.
Asides those, he also had other gigs requiring him to DJ at festivals, concerts, etc. This also gave him good exposure and an opportunity to build a strong network.
During an interview, Spinall even disclosed that his first song ‘Gbagbe E’ which featured Burnaboy was a miracle in a way as Burnaboy did the song solely as a means to say thank you to Spinall for being one of the first few DJs who played his song in Lagos back then.
2014: Spinall starts making music
From findings, Spinall’s decision to start making his own music was not made in 2014. He has always had that desire to actively be in the music scene. Chances are, he was only waiting for the right moment to unleash his talent as an artist.
In 2014, DJ Spinall founded TheCAPMusic. His initial hit, “GbaGbe E,” featuring Burna Boy, debuted that same year too.

8 questions and answers about DJ Spinall’s life
When did Spinall decide that he was going to be a DJ?

While in senior secondary school three (SS3) Spinall was made the social prefect of his school and part of his responsibility was to ensure that the weekends were fun for all students.
In his own account, “…there was a particular time I had to hire a DJ, which was very expensive then, almost more expensive than our school fees. But we just had to hire one and when he came to school, he brought the full DJ equipment. He brought turntables and mixers and speakers and, you know, it was all mixing and scratching and showing off the skills. And I was there like, wow, this is so cool. You know, probably after school I should learn how to do this.”
When he graduated from secondary school, he started making inquiries on how to be a DJ. He shared this process during an interview saying, “I met this guy called DJ Slim, and DJ Slim was like the biggest DJ where I was staying in Ijaye Ojokoro”.
“I will always go to him every night, every day.
In fact, he got tired of me saying ‘this guy has come again’ and I’m like, yes boss, what’s up man? Tell me what’s up with this thing, so we started. It took me about two years to learn the fundamentals like how to cue a song, how to catch your first beats, your snares, vocals, that’s like basic, because if you don’t learn how to find the cues and these things, you can’t go into mixing, which is like probably the next stage”.
How did he get his name DJ Spinall?
There’s every chance you already decoded the words making up the name ‘Spinall’. So let’s find out what the DJ himself said concerning the origin of the name so you can confirm your thoughts.
“I sat down with Tolu, my younger brother, ” he said, “and we’re like Tolu, so what DJ would I call myself? We started brainstorming. From my own perspective, I would rather just spin everything, you know, so I’m like a DJ that spins all.”
Do you get the clue now? A DJ that spins all – DJ Spinall.
What about the cap? Why is Spinall always wearing a cap?
If you’re an outgoing person, you’d definitely love the story behind the cap. When he was young, his dad loved partying on Saturdays, Spinall always looked at him as he adjusted his cap in front of the mirror and that became a clue to tell that his dad was about to turn up somewhere.
So as he grew up, he began adding the cap to his outfits meaning that he’s ready to turn up and party.
Is that why his record label is called TheCAP?
It’s part of the reason but Spinall once made a clarification saying, “TheCAP is really more than just a hat, it’s an intentional nod to my signature accessory and a play on words. TheCAP stands for “the crazy ass party” which is how fans would describe my events so we made it official. I think it’s one of the most clever things my team came up with”.
It’s not typical to find a DJ who also makes music. Did Spinall get any backlash from people when he embraced his dream to be a DJ and artist at once?
Definitely he did but while there aren’t details of the exact backlash he got, Spinall mentioned that he recalled having a conversation about this topic, stating, “A lot of people don’t like growth. People are not comfortable with you growing to be better than what they originally know you for. People are so comfortable with the state of bad luck that when you start pushing things that you want to go to the next level, you want to be better in your career and your talent, people start creating this unnecessary friction towards your energy.” He emphasized that some things may not be apparent to everyone, and it’s crucial to remain aware of personal goals and aspirations.
Spinall conveyed, “I always say that it’s not just about music. Everything I do in life, I want to be better. I want to be better with how I dress, how I talk. There’s always a next level to everything. There’s no need to explain your dreams to people.”
Previously, DJ Spinall played other artists’ songs at events but now he plays his own songs too, what’s the experience like for him?
The feeling is a different one for Spinall no doubt. This is how he narrated the experience during an interview session on ‘The Dadabhoy Show’.
“From time, I wanted to make music as a songwriter or as a producer. I just want to do something with the music aside from playing people’s music and being an entertainer. But when I started making music, I did ‘Gbagbe E’ with Burnaboy in November 2014.
“What Burna Boy did then was show me love for being the first person to play his music in Lagos back then. So we made the record just from friendship. And the success of the record? Ah, even me self I shock.
“So that kind of like inspired me alot and I was like, so people like this kind of record? Okay, let’s give them jollof rice, amala, beans and plantain, etc. We just started making it better and getting better at it. So going to shows, playing my song and seeing the reaction, sometimes it gets too emotional that I don’t even play my songs when I’m working. It’s Tolu that used to come and tell me to play songs. It was a lot.
“If you randomly come to a place where I’m the DJ, you’ll see people begging me to play my songs. So it just glorifies the idea that it is important to follow your dreams. The experience is priceless, it’s beautiful, especially for someone like me who’s come from zero. There was no shortcut. It was pure God’s grace and hard work and sleepless nights. It makes me humble. And also, I’m hoping that somebody out there that has nothing could look at me and be like, ‘yeah, there’s hope somewhere, I fit do am’.”
Songs from DJ are pushed aside in the music industry, how did Spinall grow beyond the music politics to be recognised as an artist too?

As a DJ, if you think about the politics or think about the stress and heart breaks in the music business; it’s enough to devastate you not to make music anymore.
Sharing his coping mechanism for this challenge, Spinall said, “I try not to focus my energy on those. From ‘Gbagbe E’ to ‘Olowo’ to ‘Money’ to ‘Ohenma’, to ‘This Love’ to ‘Baba’; but when they’re having big record conversations, it’s not even there. I feel like if people pause and think about it, DJs are doing everything for the game. The DJs have committed their life, their career, their passion, their resources to the game.”
What does Spinall look out for when collaborating with new artists?
According to him, it’s talent and passion. He says, “You can never go wrong with those two. But! It’s also important to have a good work ethic. You can be talented and passionate but if you don’t have a good work ethic then it makes it hard to create dope shit”.

Controversies
On March 27, 2022, DJ Spinall tweeted a message that sparked a misunderstanding. His tweet, “Those who make much noise about money have the least,” was interpreted by fans as a jab at Burna Boy, who had recently claimed to be the highest-paid musician in African music history. This take gained traction due to the criticisms Burna Boy had received for his statement, with some calling him a “noisemaker.”
DJ Spinall, however, denied any intention of criticizing Burna Boy. He disabled comments on the original tweet and clarified in subsequent tweets that he was referring to a separate incident he had experienced at an event.
